As 2020 winds down, many of us are breathing a sigh of relief. Itâs been a doozy of a year and most of us are ready for a change. Hopefully, the new year will be healthier, happier and more stable for us all.Â
But weâd be cheating ourselves if we just turned our backs on 2020 and moved on. True, it hasnât been easy, but living through difficult times can make us stronger, more resilient, and even happier. Letâs look back on the lessons we learned in 2020, and how we can carry them with us into the new year:
Makeshift home offices, homeschool pods, Zoom birthday parties...for every ânormalâ activity, weâve had to create a slightly wackier version for 2020. Having our routines shaken up taught us to adapt and rise to the challenge, often revealing strengths we didnât know we had.
Itâs been the year of the yoga pants, with offices shutting down, people staying in and convenience trumping convention. Taking a break from the typical dress code let us experiment with balancing how we want to look and how we want to feel. Pajama bottoms and a fancy headband braid? Why not? If it works for you, own it.
Social distancing kept us from meeting up with our friends, meaning that many of us spent a lot of time hanging out with...ourselves. The enforced solitude (and the many other stresses of 2020) have taught us the importance of listening to our own inner thoughts and taking time for self-care.
After a year when so many of us lost so much, itâs important to remember what we still have. Maybe youâre working out of your kidâs bedroom, but youâre working. Maybe youâre lonely, but youâre healthy. This doesnât mean we canât mourn what weâve lost, but we should try to keep it in perspective.
