As the days get cooler and the nights get longer, the atmosphere starts to sparkle with holiday cheer. There are so many reasons to love the holiday season: family time, traditions, food…and of course, fashion! Unless you’re living in a Jane Austen novel, you probably don’t get too many chances to dress formally—until the holidays roll around.

Here are some holiday hairstyles to consider while you plan your looks for the season’s parties and photos.

Put a Bow on It

There’s something about the holiday season that just begs for hair ribbons, especially in rich winter fabrics like velvet and suede. For a little holiday flair, wear your hair in a half-ponytail and tie a bow at the back of your head, covering the ponytail holder. Add an ornate headband braid to the mix (think the Winged Beauty or Nori Gourd) to lend your look a little maturity and depth.

Low Pony Bow Pony

Another way to rock the ribbons: low ponytails. Don’t start yawning! You can pull off a gorgeous, photo-worthy style by just sliding a headband braid into place, gathering your hair at the nape of your neck, and tying a ribbon around the base of your ponytail. The braid and the ribbon keep things interesting, while the sleek simplicity of the ponytail keeps the look from going over the top. Match your ribbon to your outfit, or choose a winter classic like midnight blue, hunter green or burgundy.

Pearly Delights

Put a modern twist on timeless elegance by working pearls into your holiday look. Wear a thick headband studded with faux pearls, letting your hair hang down your back. (To absolutely dazzle the holiday crowd, lengthen your locks with the glue-free Liz extension.) Finish the look with pearl earrings.

Easy Updo

Trust us: this elegant updo is much simpler than it looks. After putting on your favorite headband braid, take a section of loose hair and tuck it up and into the elastic band at the back of your head. Repeat with the rest of your hair, creating a neat roll that completely hides the band of your headband braid. If you like, add a little sparkle with statement earrings or jeweled pins.

Braided Low Bun

Here’s another easy updo that’s perfect for parties. Slip on your headband braid and pull your hair into a low ponytail. Braid the ponytail, then twist it around itself until it forms a neat coil. Secure it with an elastic that matches your hair and use bobby pins to lock it down.

Headband Braid + Curls

Simple but stunning, this look works with all hair lengths. Brush out your hair, slip on your favorite headband braid and curl your hair loosely. Now is not the time for beachy waves—go for more structured curls and run your fingers through them if they look too stiff.

Enhanced High Ponytail

Pull your hair into a sleek high ponytail, using gel to tame flyaways if necessary. Wrap the Bree Ponytail extension around the base of your ponytail to add length and fullness. Curl your entire ponytail with a wand (the Bree can be safely styled at up to 365℉/160℃), either wrapping all your hair around the barrel in one direction to create a stylized swirl or curling it in sections for a wavier vibe.

Happy Hairstyling!
